CHICAGO AND NORTH WESTERN

At one time, some Northwest Line trains proceeded north from Mayfair over the Skokie and the Weber spur lines. And some West Line trains proceeded north from Geneva over a spur line to St. Charles.

In earlier years, the Northwest Line suburban timetable only covered line to Crystal Lake. While trains beyond to Harvard, and via branch to Williams Bay Wisconsin, were considered more "intercity". Service via branch cut back to Lake Geneva in 1966. And in 1975, with no subsidy from the state of Wisconsin, service was cut back to Richmond, the last stop within Illinois. Service finally cut back in 1980 to McHenry.

MINOR COMMUTER RAILROADS/EARLY 1970'S
These commuter operations had generally changed little since the 1930's or 1940's.

The Norfolk & Western and Gulf Mobile & Ohio services were retained and subsequently expanded by RTA and Metra. While the Penn Central service, outside the RTA jurisdiction, was eventually discontinued.
