INTERCITY BUS ROUTES - HISTORY

VIRGINIA

Richmond Greyhound Lines, Atlantic Greyhound Lines, and Virginia Trailways were the most significant bus companies in Virginia. Richmond Greyhound Lines was affiliated with the Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad.

Russell's Guide Table Numbers

Greyhound tables had numbers below 700, while Trailways tables had numbers above 7000. Table numbers in between were independent bus companies. Although Greyhound Lines of Canada, not covered here, had tables numbered in the low 700's.

Where no table number is indicated, service had been discontinued by then.

Further clues on Greyhound or Trailways affiliations are the presence of a "G" or a "T" in a company abbreviation. Trailways company abbreviations are followed by a "(T)". While abbreviations of certain Greyhound companies not obviously "Greyhound" in name are followed by a "(G)".

Over the years, certain Greyhound or Trailways routes were sold to the following independent bus companies, identified by the following Russell's Guide table numbers.

GREYHOUND BUS COMPANIES

Atlantic Greyhound Lines (AGL) - incorporated 1936 as merger of Atlantic Greyhound Lines of North Carolina (AGNC), Atlantic Greyhound Lines of West Virginia (AGWV), East Coast Stages (ECS), Old Dominion Stages (ODS), and several other companies. Consolidated 1960 into Southern Division of Greyhound. Atlantic Greyhound Lines of West Virginia had been incorporated in 1928 as Blue & Gray Lines, renamed in 1931 to Atlantic Greyhound Lines of West Virginia. Atlantic Greyhound Lines of North Carolina had been formed in 1925 as Camel City Coach Co., renamed in 1931 to Atlantic Greyhound Lines of North Carolina. And Old Dominion Stages was incorporated in 1929.

Capitol Greyhound Lines (CPG) - incorporated 1930, consolidated 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound.

Richmond Greyhound Lines (RGL) - incorporated 1936, acquiring Peninsula Transit Corp. (PTC), which had been incorporated in 1919. Consolidated 1960 into Eastern Division of Greyhound.


TRAILWAYS BUS COMPANIES

Virginia Stage Lines/Virginia Trailways (VAT) - incorporated 1925, in 1938 joined Trailways, sold 1966 to Transcontinental Bus System/Continental Trailways.

Consolidated Bus Lines/Consolidated Trailways (CBL) - formed 1926 by J. E. Craft, incorporated 1933 as Consolidated Bus Lines, in 1954 joined Trailways, in 1956 merged into Virginia Stage Lines/Virginia Trailways, sold 1966 to Transcontinental Bus System/Continental Trailways.

Carolina Coach Co./Carolina Trailways (CCC) - incorporated 1925 as Carolina Coach Co., in 1940 joined Trailways.

In 1960, Continental Trailways acquired Tennessee Coach Co. (TCC), which had been incorporated in 1928.
