INTERCITY BUS ROUTES - HISTORY

PENNSYLVANIA

Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines and Central Greyhound Lines were the most significant bus companies in Pennsylvania, while several Trailways companies also operated. Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines and Central Greyhound Lines were affiliated with the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad respectively, the most significant railroads operating in the state. A few bus companies either competed with or were owned by Interurban Railways, indicated in CAPITAL LETTERS.

1976 MAP

Color coded map shows intercity bus routes in existence in 1976.

Blue indicates Greyhound, red indicates Trailways. Additional colors indicate significant independent bus companies, and are identified with labels. Black indicates smaller independent companies.

Thin blue or red lines indicate routes which were once part of Greyhound or Trailways, but later transferred to independent bus companies.

Russell's Guide Table Numbers

Greyhound tables had numbers below 700, while Trailways tables had numbers above 7000. Table numbers in between were independent bus companies. Although Greyhound Lines of Canada, not covered here, had tables numbered in the low 700's.

Where no table number is indicated, service had been discontinued by then.

Further clues on Greyhound or Trailways affiliations are the presence of a "G" or a "T" in a company abbreviation. Trailways company abbreviations are followed by a "(T)". While abbreviations of certain Greyhound companies not obviously "Greyhound" in name are followed by a "(G)".

Over the years, certain Greyhound or Trailways routes were sold to the following independent bus companies, identified by the following Russell's Guide table numbers.

2215 Blue & White Lines
2332 Lincoln Coach Lines
2475-2484 Blue Bird Coach Lines
7141-7146 Capitol Trailways

GREYHOUND BUS COMPANIES

Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines (PGL) - incorporated 1930, consolidated in 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound. In 1936 acquired Peoples Rapid Transit Co. (PRT), Pennsylvania Greyhound Transit Co., and Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of Virginia (PVGT). Peoples Rapid Transit Co. was incorporated in 1925, Pennsylvania Greyhound Transit Co. was incorporated in 1926 as Pennsylvania General Transit Co., and Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of Virginia was incorporated in 1929 as Pennsylvania-Virginia General Transit Co. The two latter companies were given the "Greyhound" names in 1934. Two earlier Greyhound companies had been incorporated in 1926 in Indiana (GLIN) and Ohio (GLOH), with routes in 1930 reassigned to Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines, and the original Central Greyhound Lines which later became Great Lakes Greyhound Lines of Indiana.

Central Greyhound Lines (CGL) - incorporated 1936 as merger of Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York (EGNY), Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of New York, and Eastern Greyhound Lines of Michigan. Consolidated 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound. Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York was incorporated in 1925 as Colonial Motor Coach Corp., renamed in 1930 to Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York. In 1933, Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York absorbed Eastern Greyhound Lines of Ohio (EGOH), which had been incorporated in 1923 as Cleveland-Ashtabula-Conneaut Bus Co., renamed 1928 to Great Lakes Stages.

West Ridge Transportation Co. (WRS) - incorporated 1922, consolidated 1950 into Central Greyhound Lines.

In 1955, Eastern Greyhound Lines acquired Blue Ridge Transportation Co. (BRL), which had been formed in 1923 as a bus subsidiary of Potomac Edison, formerly Hagerstown & Frederick Railway.

TRAILWAYS BUS COMPANIES

American Buslines (ABI) - incorporated 1935 as All American Bus Lines, renamed 1946 to American Buslines and joined Trailways, sold 1953 to Transcontinental Bus System/Continental Trailways.

Safeway Trails/Safeway Trailways (STS) - in 1938 joined Trailways, sold 1966 to Transcontinental Bus System/Continental Trailways.

Capitol Bus Co./Capitol Trailways (CBC) - incorporated 1934 as Capitol Bus Co., in 1948 joined Trailways.

Eastern Trails/Eastern Trailways (ETR) - formed 1937, in 1939 joined Trailways, sold 1946 to American Buslines, sold 1953 to Transcontinental Bus System.

Frank Martz Coach Co./Martz Trailways (FMC) - incorporated 1927, in 1936 joined Trailways.

Reading Transportation Co./Reading Trailways (RTC) - formed 1927 as bus subsidiary of Reading Railroad, in 1955 joined Trailways, sold 1964 to various other Trailways companies.

In 1969, Continental Trailways acquired Edwards Lake To Sea System (EMT) which had been formed in 1918 as Curwensville Motor Transit Co., and incorporated 1921 as Edwards Motor Transit Co.

EARLIER TRAILWAYS COMPANIES

Some of the more obscure Trailways member companies, which eventually became part of the nationwide Trailways system.

Allentown & Reading Transit/Allentown & Reading Trailways - acquired by Reading Transportation Co./Reading Trailways.
