Russell's Guide Table Numbers

Greyhound tables had numbers below 700, while Trailways tables had numbers above 7000. Table numbers in between were independent bus companies. Although Greyhound Lines of Canada, not covered here, had tables numbered in the low 700's.

Where no table number is indicated, service had been discontinued by then.

Further clues on Greyhound or Trailways affiliations are the presence of a "G" or a "T" in a company abbreviation. Trailways company abbreviations are followed by a "(T)". While abbreviations of certain Greyhound companies not obviously "Greyhound" in name are followed by a "(G)".

Over the years, certain Greyhound or Trailways routes were sold to the following independent bus companies, identified by the following Russell's Guide table numbers.

1986-1997 Vermont Transit
2010-2043 Bonanza Bus Lines
2420 Brunswick Transportation Co.
2429 Arrow Line
7031-7052 Peter Pan Bus Lines

Vermont Transit routes were eventually renumbered into the Greyhound table numbering system.

GREYHOUND BUS COMPANIES

Eastern Greyhound Lines of New England (EGNE) - incorporated 1930, consolidated 1950 into New England Greyhound Lines, consolidated 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound.

New England Greyhound Lines (NEGL) - incorporated 1937, consolidated 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound. In 1955 acquired Maine Central Transportation Co. (MCT), which had been formed in 1925 as a bus subsidiary of Maine Central Railroad, originally named SamOset Co., reorganized 1932 as Maine Central Transportation Co.

Central Greyhound Lines (CGL) - incorporated 1936 as merger of Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York, Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of New York, and Eastern Greyhound Lines of Michigan. Consolidated 1955 into Eastern Division of Greyhound. Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York was incorporated in 1925 as Colonial Motor Coach Corp., renamed in 1930 to Eastern Greyhound Lines of New York. And Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of New York was incorporated in 1924 as Buffalo Interurban Bus Lines Co., renamed 1931 to Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines of New York.

Eastern Greyhound Lines of New England was wholly owned by Greyhound, while New England Greyhound Lines was jointly owned with the New York New Haven & Hartford Railroad, which had owned the New England Transportation Co. and other bus companies which became part of New England Greyhound Lines. In the few years after the 1937 formation of New England Greyhound Lines, certain routes were transferred so that New England Greyhound Lines operated the routes south of Boston, while Eastern Greyhound Lines of New England operated the routes north of Boston. And in 1950 when Greyhound acquired full ownership of New England Greyhound Lines, the two companies were combined.

TRAILWAYS BUS COMPANIES

Blue Way Lines/Trailways of New England (TNE) - incorporated 1922 as Blue Way Lines, in 1936 joined Trailways under name Blue Way Trailways, renamed 1941 to Trailways of New England, sold 1957 to Transcontinental Bus System/Continental Trailways.
