Intercity passenger trains serving Denver in 1942, 1956, and 1971 immediately prior to the creation of Amtrak.

Union Station
1701 Wynkoop St.
Opened 1914, replacing earlier station at same location built in 1881

Number of station tracks: 9 through
Interlocked switches controlled as follows:
Tower A: controlled the south end of the station
Tower B: controlled the north end of the station

Passenger service retained by Amtrak in 1971, with the Denver Zephyr and California Zephyr.

Trains 17-18, the California Zephyr, replaced the Exposition Flyer in 1949.

Rio Grande initially did not join Amtrak, and was required to continue operation of its remaining trains beyond 1971.

Until 1947, trains to and from Craig used the separate Denver & Salt Lake Railway station at 15th St. and Bassett St. In that year, that railroad was absorbed by Rio Grande.

Trains 17-18, the California Zephyr, replaced the Exposition Flyer in 1949.

Passenger service intended to be discontinued in 1971 with the creation of Amtrak. But when Rio Grande initially did not join Amtrak, Amtrak service west of Denver continued via Union Pacific via Wyoming.

Trains 9-10, the City of St. Louis, replaced the Pacific Limited in 1947. The City of St. Louis operated via Wabash Railroad east of Kansas City.


STATIONS TODAY

Amtrak continues to use Union Station.
