Burlington Route historically named its subdivisions by the end points. With the 1970 Burlington Northern merger, numbered subdivisions were adopted, a system which had already been used by the former Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads. Subdivisions were renumbered as divisions were reorganized over the years. In 1993, the present named subdivisions were adopted.
