In 1947, Union Pacific managed to introduce daily service on all of its "City" trains. Primarily by scraping together new consists of lightweight cars, originally acquired before the war to partially reequip the Challenger and the San Francisco Overland. The articulated train set previously assigned to the City of Portland was retired, after having filled in for the two City of Denver sets while those trains were refurbished. The articulated trains remained on the City of Denver until 1954, while the other "City" trains received new consists. Four new consists for the City of Portland, and two additional consists each for the City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco. Although a few cars from those war time consists were transferred to the new additional consists, along with some spare cars. The three trains to the west coast each operated with just four consists, offering little allowance for possible delays. The City of St. Louis was introduced during that time, operating only as far west as Cheyenne, with cars switched to and from other trains serving the west coast. Union Pacific finally began receiving new cars in 1949, allowing replacement of some cars and allowing for a fifth consist for each train. By 1956, all cars were replaced, including with some new dome cars.
