UNION PACIFIC

(PRE WW II)

The Union Pacific trains operated over the Chicago & North Western between Chicago and Omaha, a line which the Union Pacific finally acquired in 1995. The Union Pacific had some of the earliest streamliners built, beginning in 1934 with a three car articulated train, operating between Kansas City and Salina as the City of Salina. Soon afterward, Union Pacific introduced longer articulated trains for the long distance "City" trains operating west of Chicago. Initially, only one consist operated on each train to the west coast, supplemented in subsequent years by conventional locomotive hauled streamlined trains. But until 1947, only the City of Denver operated daily. Union Pacific and Chicago & North Western also operated the Challenger (to Los Angeles), and the San Francisco Overland, each of which included some lightweight cars.
