Most railroads lettered the individual units of a locomotive set, with the lead unit lettered A and following units lettered B, and C and D if necessary. Santa Fe did not apply a letter to the lead unit, while the first following unit was lettered A, and additional units were lettered B and C if necessary. Rosters typically identified the lead unit with "L", which is done here.

In 1952 and 1953, the E1A's were rebuilt into E8AM's, and the box cabs and E1B's were rebuilt into E8BM's.
