The most significant railroad serving Nashville was Louisville & Nashville. Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis also had a significant presence, that railroad was acquired by L&N in 1957. Both railroads used Union Station. Nashville was served by L&N's Louisville, Evansville, and Birmingham Divisions, parts of a railroad extending from Cincinnati and St. Louis to New Orleans. The Columbia line was an alternate route between Nashville and Birmingham. NC&SL extended from Memphis to Atlanta.

Tennessee Central originated at Nashville, using a separate station, and with a line east to Harriman.
