After its opening in 1933, 30th Street Station emerged as the Pennsylvania Railroad's main station for intercity stations. More convenient than Broad Street Station with its stub nature. Broad Street Station remained in use until 1952 for local and commuter trains, phased out in favor of the underground Suburban Station at approximately the same location.
The Suburban Station became a through station in 1984, with completion of the Center City Tunnel, connecting the commuter networks of the former Pennsylvania Railroad and the the former Reading Railroad.
In addition, Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines commuter trains operated into southern New Jersey from Camden, NJ, with ferry connections from Philadelphia. Certain trains instead terminated at one of the Pennsylvania Railroad stations in Philadelphia.
