E9A 33C was converted to HEP in 1969, using a constant speed rear engine instead of a separate Cummins diesel engine. The other E9's were the only E-units ever built new with Cummins HEP generators, instead of steam generators.
The F-units were retired in 1974, while the E9's were retired between 1985 and 1989. E9's 33C and 37A went to the Illinois Railway Museum.
