Those intercity trains were discontinued when Amtrak started in 1971. In 1970, C&NW acquired 4 second hand E-units from Kansas City Southern and modified them for suburban service. In 1971, C&NW rebuilt and renumbered 20 F7's. All other F7's were then withdrawn from commuter service, and some were leased to Amtrak to operate with leased bilevel intercity cars. Those bilevel intercity cars were eventually sold to Amtrak. In 1973, C&NW acquired 11 second hand E-units from Union Pacific, and rebuilt them before placing them in suburban service. The UP locomotives included a few E8B's and E9B's, which were rebuilt with home made cabs, which aesthetically were not very pleasing. And in 1974, C&NW rebuilt and renumbered 11 E8's. They might have rebuilt additional E8's, but the rebuild program was stopped around the time when RTA legislation was approved. C&NW would thus be able to look to the RTA to eventually replace the locomotives.
Two ex-CN&W F7's became Metra #305 and #308 and were operated on special occasions, until they were donated to the Illinois Railway Museum in 1999. The other F7's all were retired by 1984. The 5000 series E-units which had not been rebuilt, were retired between 1983 and 1985. Most of the 500 series rebuilt E-units were retired between 1984 and 1989. E-units 509, 515, 516, 518, and 521, survived until 1993.
