Segment was part of Chesapeake & Ohio main line between Chicago and Cincinnati. Through passenger service from Chicago was discontinued in 1933, operating only from Hammond until 1949. In 1974, because of deteriorated trackage on the then Penn Central, Amtrak's James Whitcomb Riley began using this route. In 1977 train was renamed the Cardinal. In 1978, train began using Baltimore & Ohio trackage between Cottage Grove and Cincinnati, via Hamilton. In 1986, the Cardinal shifted to a new routing via Indianapolis.
