In 1955, for its main route between Grand Rapids and Traverse City, Chesapeake & Ohio adopted its route via the newly acquired Manistee & Northeastern via Manistee, along with using a segment of the Ludington line west of Baldwin and a branch line from Walhalla to Manistee. The direct route between Baldwin and Kaleva was then abandoned.
