CHICAGO'S LOST STATIONS

PEORIA & PEKIN UNION

Terminal railroad jointly owned by most of the railroads entering Peoria and Pekin, and operator of Union Stations in both cities.

All railroads entering Peoria used Union Station, except the Rock Island which had its own station, and the Minneapolis & St. Louis which used the Rock Island station.

All railroads serving Pekin used Union Station except the Santa Fe, whose trains terminated at a separate station without serving Peoria, and the Alton, whose trains between Peoria and Springfield used a separate station. The Alton station still stands, behind a Walgreens at the southeast corner of 14th St. and Broadway.

Other railroads not otherwise mentioned in this section include Chicago & Illinois Midland, Illinois Central, and Pennsylvania Railroad, all serving Peoria from the south. The Pennsylvania Railroad included a station in Morton.

Beginning in the 1930's, railroads began pulling out of these stations, either by discontinuing passenger service into Peoria, or by moving to their own separate stations away from downtown Peoria.

Peoria - station was located west of State St. and north of the Illinois River.

Pekin - station was located west of 2nd St., on the south side of the track.
