SOUTH SHORE PHOTOS

Contemporary photos of "America's Last Interurban".

South Shore Line cars sit between the rush hours south of Randolph Street Station, near the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hegewisch is the only South Shore Line station within Illinois, all other stations are in Indiana. A westbound train is seen approaching the Hegewisch station. Several years later, in 2006, the station would be equipped with high level platforms and gantlet tracks.

Hammond, Indiana, was the first station in recent years to receive high level platforms and gantlet tracks.

The classic "Spanish Insull" station at Beverly Shores has been beautifully preserved.

The Michigan City station building, which unfortunately is no longer used.

Street running in Michigan City, westbound on 11th Street.

Not exactly characteristic of "America's Last Interurban". But the new South Bend station at Michana Regional Airport opened in 1992.
