General Public Utilities Corp. later was renamed GPU Inc., and eventually restricted its operations to Pennsylvania. GPU made news in 1979 because it owned the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, site of America's worst nuclear power plant accident. GPU eventually became part of FirstEnergy Corp., also including various utilities in Ohio.
