RED LINE (Howard-Dan Ryan)

Operates via elevated structure on North Side, subway through downtown, and in Dan Ryan Expressway median strip on South Side. Elevated route on North Side has 4 tracks, with Red Line trains using inner tracks and Purple Line Express trains from Evanston using outer tracks. Purple Line Express trains operate during weekday rush hours only, operating nonstop between Howard St. and Belmont Ave. South of Belmont Ave., Brown Line trains also use outer tracks, and Brown and Purple Line trains make all stops. The Red Line has been the CTA's main trunk route since 1993, when the new tunnel was opened between the Cermak/Chinatown station and the Roosevelt Road station in the State Street Subway. Prior to then, trains from Howard Street continued to the Englewood and Jackson Park elevated lines south of Roosevelt Road. And the Dan Ryan line, opened in 1969, had been connected to the Lake Street elevated line via a modern elevated structure northeast of the Cermak/Chinatown station, and the old Loop elevated. The Red Line serves both Chicago baseball parks, although the last all-Chicago World Series was in 1906, before even the old Comiskey Park was built.
