I rode Amtrak's Cardinal between Chicago and Peru a few times over this route, between 1978 and 1981. By then, the train was operating via Wellsboro, so I never did ride the train via Hammond, and never had the opportunity to diagram that segment. I became friendly with one of the conductors. And one Sunday after one trip from Chicago to Peru, he invited me up to the dispatcher's office in Peru. This office had the CTC panel controlling the entire line from Cincinnati to Hammond. And at the time, the only trains on the line were the two Cardinals in opposite directions. In those days, the Cardinal operated daily. Bill Vandervoort.
