Over the years, as routes were discontinued or consolidated, most routes were renumbered to available two digit numbers.
List includes only routes in Missouri. List does not include newer routes recently created by Bi-State Transit or Metro during the 21st Century. Many of them either express routes, shuttle routes, and feeder routes connecting with the Metrolink light rail line.
The historic numbering of streetcar and bus routes is complex, and this page is divided into several sections. Prior to the 1963 takeover by Bi-State Transit, all city and certain suburban routes were operated by St. Louis Public Service Co. (SLPS), and earlier the United Railways Co. of St. Louis.
Listed are the original streetcar and companies, along with dates when horse cars and electric streetcars were introduced. In many situations, the companies and dates refer to when the first segment of that route was created, with later extensions with electric streetcars introduced by successor companies. Most horse car routes operating west of downtown St. Louis did not operate west of Grand Avenue. And for many of the electric streetcar routes extended further west, along with the bus replacements, the routings east of Grand Avenue in the downtown area were changed over the years. As a result, many routes no longer operate over the same street street segments where the original horse car or original electric streetcar segments operated.

(PMB). Beginning in 1923, PMB began operating bus routes in competition with the streetcars, sometimes operating further out than the ends of the streetcar routes. As it turned out, the streetcar system was under built. And after acquisition, it became practical for SLPS to continue to operate the buses as well as the streetcars. As the streetcars were eliminated, these bus route numbers were adopted for all remaining bus service. Original PMB route numbers are also indicated.
Streetcar routes 56, 67, 71, 80, and 82 were discontinued with no direct bus replacement.
Streetcar route 64 to St. Charles was shortened and combined with route 65 in 1932. Replacement bus service was operated by Red Line Service, which later became part of St. Louis County Transit (SLCT). The 1963 formation of Bi-State Transit also included the acquisition of SLCT, and this bus route was initially numbered 602 by Bi-State. And shortly afterward, this bus route was consolidated into bus route 65, later route 32, and later route 35.
On 8/3/50, suburban routes 01, 57, and 58 were sold to St. Louis County Transit (SLCT). It is not clear how the successor to route 57 further evolved. The 1963 formation of Bi-State Transit also included the acquisition of SLCT.
Several routes were discontinued effective 3/30/2009, after voters failed to approve increased transit funding in the November 2008 election. Additional routes were discontinued, but were restored 8/3/2009 when additional federal money and emergency state money was made available. And in 2010, a new funding referendum was improved by voters.
Effective 3/14/2016 with the opening of the North County Transit Center, many routes were restructured, with new routes numbered in the 70's.

The Finot Bus Lines route on Gravois Ave. was operated by Suburban Service Bus Co. for a period of time. But that route, south of St. Louis, was too remote from the rest of the Suburban Service Bus Co. routes north of St. Louis. So in 1943, that route was sold to St. Louis County Bus Co., which had a greater presence south of St. Louis.
St. Louis County Transit operated as far north as Florissant until 1950, when that segment was sold to Ferguson-Broadway Bus Lines. St. Louis County Transit also operated suburban segments of former streetcar routes 01 and 64.
The public takeover of transit in the St. Louis area involved Bi-State Transit acquiring the St. Louis Public Service Co., along with the St. Louis County Transit Co., Ferguson-Broadway Bus Lines, V-K Bus Lines, and several companies in Illinois not covered at this page.
Additional obscure bus companies previously existed, according to the 1952 "Mass Transportation's Directory", and the WPA American Guide Series of state guidebooks.
