YOUNGSTOWN TRANSIT ROUTES

CONCISE HISTORY

In 1973, the publicly owned Western Reserve Transit Authority (WRTA) acquired the privately owned Youngstown Transit Co. This page lists WRTA routes which can trace their histories back to privately ownership. Some routes were eventually discontinued by WRTA. And since its formation WRTA added several new bus routes, which are not listed. Routes were renumbered in 2017.

Included are present, 2016, 1983 and 1970 route numbers. Discontinued streetcar routes which were not replaced with buses, are listed at the beginning. Discontinued bus routes are listed at the end. Not all information is complete or available.

After a period when local routes were numbered mainly in the 30's, routes were renumbered in 2017. Including restoration of some previous route numbers.

Conversion of all trolleybus routes to motor buses was completed in 1959.

The Boardman Transit Co. service, introduced in 1944 and acquired by Youngstown Transit Co. in 1959, became an extension of the Market bus route.

At one time in the early 1980's, Youngstown became the largest city in the United States without public transportation, when the bus system shut down. The 1983 data is from shortly after service was restored.
