A sampling of freight train activity in the Chicago area, mostly during the mid 1990's.


Hammond is the best place to watch freight action on Norfolk Southern's former Nickel Plate line from Fort Wayne. In 1995, the new Hohman Avenue overpass was still under construction, as a westbound freight is about to pass under the overpass.


In 1997, GP38-2 #5141 leads an eastbound movement through Hammond.


In 2004, switching of auto carrier cars near the Ford auto plant in Hegewisch, where the Norfolk Southern line parallels the South Shore Line. View is from the South Shore Line station.


In 2011, D9-40CW #9600 leads a westbound freight train past the Hammond-Whiting Amtrak station.
