CANADIAN NATIONAL

A sampling of freight train activity in the Chicago area, mostly during the mid 1990's.

A Union Pacific freight train is seen northbound on Illinois Central trackage on Chicago's south side, in 1998. This was shortly before CN's acquisition of Illinois Central. UP SD60M #6147 leads, followed by UP locomotives still painted for former railroads, Chicago & North Western, and Southern Pacific.

CN was operating the former Illinois Central in 2012, when this northbound freight train passed through Richton Park, viewed from the Metra platform. SD75I #5668 leads. This train had paused, waiting to diverge east over the new connection at Matteson to the former Elgin Joliet & Eastern.

In 2012, as the above train turns east off the former Illinois Central towards the former Elgin Joliet & Eastern, Amtrak #393 speeds south through Richton Park, with P42 #76 leading.

A few days later in 2012, Amtrak #393 speeds south near 57th Street in Hyde Park, with P42 #37 leading.
