COMMUTER RAILROADS - TIMETABLES

PENN CENTRAL

Portions of a 1971 timetable, and a 1972 timetable showing commuter service between Chicago and Valparaiso, Indiana. The 1971 timetable also showed intercity passenger trains, including #48, the Broadway Limited. The Penn Central service, originally Pennsylvania Railroad, existed outside the RTA jurisdiction. Trains were subsequently operated by Conrail. In 1979, with no local or state subsidy coming from within Indiana, an arrangement was made whereby Amtrak assumed responsibility for the service, even though commuter service had not normally been considered Amtrak's responsibility. Service was discontinued in 1991.

The 1971 timetable also shows intercity trains stopping at Crown Point, Indiana. In the late 1800's, dedicated commuter trains existed between Chicago and Crown Point.
