COMMUTER RAILROADS - TIMETABLES

GULF MOBILE & OHIO

Portions of the last Gulf Mobile & Ohio passenger timetable prior to the formation of Amtrak. Prior to 1947 was the Alton Railroad, and after 1972 was part of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. This timetable listed the one daily commuter train, although the commuter train made several stops not listed in the timetable.

In 1930, there were two dedicated local trains each direction between Chicago and Joliet. The afternoon rush hour traffic was actually handled by a local train operating all the way to Bloomington. But in the aftermath of the Great Depression, the route was left with just the one daily round trip, until RTA modernization and expansion beginning in 1978.
