CN MATTESON CONNECTION

CN's 2009 acquisition of the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E), would require construction of an elaborate new connection at Matteson, where the EJ&E line passed under CN's former Illinois Central (IC) main line. This connection would involve a "double wye", northeast of where the lines crossed. Construction began in 2010. And a visit to the area on July 12, 2011, revealed progress in grading for the connection. Though no new track had yet been constructed.

Looking south from the Matteson Metra station, to the left the grading is visible for the south leg of the wye connection with the former IC.

Looking straight east from the Matteson Metra station, one can see where the two wye connections from the former IC will combine, and continue down and towards the right to connect with the former EJ&E.

Main St. in Matteson normally proceeds south and crosses the former EJ&E. Then the road was closed, to allow for realignment of the former EJ&E to accommodate the new connections. This road closure prevented a closer inspection of the former EJ&E, where the connection would be constructed.

A distant view of the former EJ&E, where the connection would be constructed. A new signal is visible.
