LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD

The Pennsylvania Railroad had some unusual operating procedures, many of which rubbed off on the Long Island Rail Road which for many years was an affiliate. The line from Valley Stream to West Hempstead was single track manual block. The train would proceed from Valley Stream to West Hempstead upon receiving a clear signal at Valley tower. Authority to return from West Hempstead to Valley Stream would be with a "Clearance Card Form A" and a "Clearance Card Form K", issued by the operator at Valley tower at the start of the round trip.
