AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS
BURLINGTON ROUTE
(PRE WW II)
The Burlington Route revolutionized the American passenger train with its fleet of Zephyr trains. The first few Zephyr trains built, including the Pioneer Zephyr preserved at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, were articulated and had only three or four cars. Too short to be handling main line traffic in and out of Chicago, so these trains were eventually assigned to secondary routes away from the Chicago main lines. The last few articulated Zephyr trains were longer, and operated from Chicago to the Twin Cities and to Denver. The Zephyr Rocket was jointly operated with the Rock Island, with each railroad supplying a consist, except for the observation cars which were both owned by Rock Island. Burlington and Rock Island also jointly owned the line between Fort Worth and Houston, and eventually a Zephyr consist was assigned to a "Rocket" train. The Texas Zephyr was operated by Burlington subsidiaries Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver, with each subsidiary supplying a consist.
Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
