In 1959, the city owned San Antonio Transit System took over the privately owned San Antonio Transit Company. And in 1978, Via Metropolitan Transit replaced the San Antonio Transit System as a regional system, serving all of Bexar County. San Antonio was the first major city to eliminate streetcars, with the last one operating in 1933.
