
With the 1933 "Century of Progress" fair nearby, Commonwealth Edison equipped this substation with the needed rectifiers, to provide extra power for the added streetcars and elevated trains to serve the fair.

Now a regular Commonwealth Edison substation, served the Stockyards elevated line in addition to streetcar lines.

The construction of the Dan Ryan Expressway required demolition of the 63rd Street substation, and construction of this substation underneath the Englewood Branch of what now is the Green Line. The substation also serves the Red Line, in the expressway median strip. This CTA "Metropolitan Transit" logo was used until the mid 1970's.
