METRA EQUIPMENT ROSTER
All of Metra's cars are of a bilevel gallery design. The only exceptions are most cars on the South Shore Line, which are single level. Metra's oldest cars were originally purchased by the original operating railroads. In the early 1970's, prior to the RTA's creation, some equipment was acquired by "Suburban Mass Transit Districts". The RTA later acquired new cars, along with cars originally owned by the Chicago and North Western and the Rock Island Railroads. Most of the existing locomotives were purchased either by the RTA or Metra.
This roster includes present and prior ownership information and numbers. Information is from various sources including Metra, and the books "Chicago's Commuter Railroads - a Guide to the Metra System", by Richard Kunz, the "Railway Passenger Car Annual", Volume IV - 1978-1979, by W. David Randall, and "Diesel Locomotive Rosters", Third Edition, by Charles W. McDonald.
