Between 1905 and 2008, between Plaines and Pequot, Santa Fe had a paired track arrangement with Chicago & Alton and various successor railroads. And that segment did not have complete CTC until the early 2000's. And in 2008, the connection was broken at Pequot with Alton successor Union Pacific, and Santa Fe successor BNSF assumed complete control of the paired track.

East of Ash Street, the line which primarily accommodated passenger trains serving Chicago was abandoned. Ash Street was previously a crossing with other railroads including the now abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad. In recent years, a new track was constructed along the former Pennsylvania Railroad right of way, connecting with the former Burlington main line. Now part of the same BNSF Railway. This new track is now identified as part of the main line.
