Former New York Central "Big Four" route from Cincinnati to Kankakee, connecting with Illinois Central for access into Chicago. Without automatic signals, manual block signal rules enabled passenger trains to operate at respectable speeds. But in 1973, deteriorated track conditions on successor Penn Central Railroad forced Amtrak to discontinue this route in favor of alternate routes.
