ROCKFORD TRANSIT HISTORY


1881 - Rockford Street Railroad Co. introduces horse car service in Rockford.

1889 - Rockford Street Railroad Co. replaces horse cars with electric cars.

1890 - Rockford Street Railroad Co. acquired by Rockford City Railway Co.

1898 - Rockford City Railway Co. acquired by Rockford Railway Light & Power Co.

1902 - Rockford & Belvidere Electric Railway Co. opens line between Rockford and Belvidere. Rockford Railway Light & Power Co. combined with Rockford & Belvidere Electric Railway Co., forming Rockford & Interurban Railway Co.

1902 - Rockford, Beloit & Janesville Railway Co. completes line between those points.

1904 - Rockford & Freeport Railway Co. completes line between Rockford and Freeport, and is combined into Rockford & Interurban Railway Co.

1906 - Rockford, Beloit & Janesville Railway Co. combined into Rockford & Interurban Railway Co.

1910 - Rockford City Traction Co. formed as subsidiary of Rockford & Interurban Railway Co., operating city streetcar lines.

1911 - Union Railway Gas & Electric Co. acquires Rockford & Interurban Railway Co. as a subsidiary.

1913 - Commonwealth Power Railway & Light Co. acquires Union Railway Gas & Electric Co. as a subsidiary.

1919 - Fay Motor Bus Co. introduces bus service between Rockford and Camp Grant.

1920 - Fay Motor Bus Co. expands operations to include various suburban and interurban routes out of Rockford.

1922 - Fay Motor Bus Co. ordered to discontinue suburban routes in Rockford area, as they are determined to be redundant to existing streetcar service.

1930 - All interurban railway lines abandoned, Rockford City Traction Co. becomes separate company.

1931 - Rockford City Traction Co. acquired by Central Illinois Electric & Gas Co.

1936 - Streetcars discontinued

1947 - Trolleybuses discontinued

1951 - Rockford bus lines sold to Rockford Transit Co., a subsidiary of Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad.

1963 - Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad abandoned, Rockford bus system sold to American Transit Corp. and is renamed Rockford Transit Corp.

1970 - City acquires Rockford Transit Corp., forming Rockford Mass Transit District
