The main port city of the Netherlands. Junction of lines west and north to Den Haag and Amsterdam, south to Dordrecht and Breda, and east to Utrecht. The junction is immediately west of the station. The line to Utrecht actually turns north from the junction, before turning east. This is also the junction with the new "Hogesnelheidslijn" (HSL/high speed line) to Amsterdam, which proceeds north paralleling the line to Utrecht over a short distance. Domestic service on that line between Amsterdam and Breda is marketed as "Intercity Direct". At Schiedam, 4 km west of Rotterdam, a line proceeds west to Hoek van Holland. This is the terminal for ferry boats to and from Harwich, England.
