UNION PACIFIC - WEST LINE

Through Oak Park, the CTA's Green Line parallels the Union Pacific line. As seen from the CTA's Harlem Ave. station, a westbound Metra train is seen stopped at the Oak Park station.

Freight activity is heavy on the Union Pacific West Line. An freight is seen, eastbound though Oak Park, on the elevated embankment.

Union Pacific's acquisition of the Chicago and North Western was 2 years away in 1993, but C40-8 #9474 is seen leading a freight train out of Proviso Yard through Elmhurst.

Further west in Wheaton, it is dusk one winter day in 1997. An eastbound freight is standing on the center track, with AC4400CW #6884 leading. Meanwhile, an eastbound Metra train approaches on the outside track. Above the Metra train is the old Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad bridge.

The barn to the left indicates the rural character of the area at the time of the extension. But that farm had closed, and would later be replaced with new suburban construction.
