Line was originally a branch off the old Galena Division, diverging north from its original line at Elgin. During the early 1930's, service was discontinued between Elgin and Crystal Lake, with all trains using the more direct Wisconsin Division line between Chicago and Crystal Lake. Williams Bay was the northern terminal, with service cut back to Lake Geneva in 1966, Richmond in 1975, and McHenry in 1980.
