Numerous local interurban lines operated beyond the 6 county Chicago metropolitan area, outside areas served by public transit agencies.
Gary Railways and its predecessor companies primarily operated the streetcars in the city of Gary. But also operated a few interurban lines, interconnecting with other electric railways to the east and west.
The Northern Indiana Railway, and various predecessor and successor companies, once operated all local and interurban public transportation in a large region of northern Indiana.
The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company once operated all electric railways in southeast Wisconsin, with interurban routes radiating out of Milwaukee.
