Formed in 1929, consolidating Southeastern Power & Light Co., Commonwealth Power Co., and Penn-Ohio Edison Co. An additional company, Union Railway Gas & Electric Co., was associated with Commonwealth Power Co. for a brief time prior to the formation of Commonwealth & Southern Corp. Commonwealth & Southern Corp. was liquidated in 1950.

The electric utility in Springfield eventually became municipally owned, while Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Co. became an independent company. And the Tennessee Electric Power Co. was dissolved, as most electric utilities in Tennessee were taken over by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Under Commonwealth & Southern Corp., Penn-Ohio Edison Co. became known as Ohio Edison Co., with Pennsylvania Power Co. as a separate subsidiary. Ohio Edison Co. eventually became part of FirstEnergy Corp., including various utilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

UNION RAILWAY GAS & ELECTRIC CO.

Incorporated 1909, acquired 1913 by Commonwealth Power Railway & Light Co. Originally included the operations in Springfield and Evansville. In 1924, became a subsidiary of newly formed Electric Railway Securities Co., with less affiliation to Commonwealth Power Co. At that time, the Springfield and Evansville operations became direct subsidiaries of Commonwealth Power Co., while the five operations in Michigan were transferred to Union Railway Gas & Electric Co.
