In 1971, the publicly owned Denver Metro Transit took over the privately owned Denver Tramway Corp. And in 1974, Denver Metro Transit became the Regional Transportation District, serving a larger area. The last streetcars ran in 1950, and trolleybuses operated from 1940 to 1955. And a new light rail system began operating in 1994.
