Within Greater London, until the 1990's, buses and the Underground were operated by the publicly owned London Transport. Now the system is privatised. With numerous companies holding the franchises to operate the bus routes. Transport For London is now the government agency overseeing the public transportation system, and provides transit information through its web site.

An alternative method for identifying bus companies, is through Google Maps. One can zoom into an area, and find the little blue squares identifying the bus stops. And clicking on a square reveals a route number and a link to the provider's web site. Almost every place in England is near a bus route.
