In 1980, the publicly owned New Jersey Transit (NJT) acquired the privately owned Transport of New Jersey (TNJ). And in 1982, NJT adopted a route numbering system to replace an old numbering system which had been adopted in 1925. Under the old system, streetcar routes had odd numbers and bus routes had even numbers. And numbers were duplicated among the several TNJ operating divisions. The new system would eliminate duplicated numbers. The streetcars were eventually replaced with buses, with "All Service Vehicles" (combination trolleybuses and motor buses) operating briefly on some routes. Some routes were eventually discontinued, with route numbers in parentheses. This page lists New Jersey Transit routes which can trace their histories back to the privately owned transit companies. Not listed are routes newly formed by New Jersey Transit.
New Jersey Transit's lowest route numbers are used for the Newark/Essex County routes, largely using the former Public Service Essex Division route numbers. New Jersey Transit also set up a small group of numbers for Union County, consisting of some former routes from both the Public Service Essex Division and Central Division. And New Jersey Transit set up a group of numbers for Newark suburban routes, many of which had been created by Public Service Coordinated Transport as "Super Service" routes, originally numbered in the 100's. In Jersey City and Hudson County, many routes had been discontinued by the time New Jersey Transit renumbered the remaining routes into the 80's. Finally, Essex County crosstown routes were assigned numbers in the 90's.

And PSCT Hudson Division route 22 was eventually assumed by the "No. 22 Hillside Corp." A new route 23 was eventually created, similar to the old route 34, and also operated by the No. 22 Hillside Corp.
PSCT route 47 between Newark and New Brunswick was an interurban railway route, which was replaced in 1931 with gas electric cars, and discontinued in 1937.
PSCT Essex Division route 15 was eventually combined with Passaic Division bus route 74, forming one route 74.
DeCamp Bus Lines was established as stage coach company in 1870, and acquired first motor bus in 1909. DeCamp continues to operate some of its own routes, but two routes eventually became part of NJT. In 1948, DeCamp sold its route 144 (later NJT route 71) to Newark Caldwell Bus Line, which in 1957 sold the route to Trackless Transit Co. DeCamp had acquired that route in 1925 from Harry Youngjohn, who had started the route a few years earlier.
Trackless Transit Co. was formed in 1922, operating crosstown route 94. In 1957, Trackless Transit Co. acquired route 144 (later NJT route 71) from Newark Caldwell Bus Line, and in 1969 acquired route 64 (later NJT route 97) from from East Orange Transit Co. In 1966, East Orange Transit Co. had acquired that route from PSCT.
Red and Tan Lines was formed in 1917, operating between New York City and Bayonne. Those routes eventually became NJT routes 6 and 10.
Independent Bus Companies
Prior to the formation of New Jersey Transit, most bus routes were part of Public Service Coordinated Transport (PSCT) or Transport of New Jersey (TNJ). The following abbreviations are used for bus companies which remained independent from PSCT and TNJ, and were later acquired by NJT.
