EARLY BUS AND AUTO STAGE LINES

MICHIGAN

EARLY BUS ROUTES

Beginning in 1923, intrastate bus service was regulated by the Michigan Public Utilities Commission, later the Michigan Public Service Commission. Information could not be located, regarding the issuance of Certificates of Convenience and Necessity for bus service. But the December 1922 issue of the publication "Bus Transportation" included a table listing the bus routes in existence in Michigan.

Not listed are city bus routes, along with bus routes of a suburban nature operating strictly within one county.

This information does not include the actual bus companies operating most of the routes. For most routes it was not possible, to establish how these companies became part of the Greyhound or other larger bus companies.

Early Bus Routes Serving Detroit
Some of the earliest bus routes in Michigan operated out of Detroit, and were of both a suburban and intercity nature. This system evolved to Great Lakes Greyhound Lines, which for many years continued to operate suburban bus services which eventually became part of the public SEMTA later SMART system.
