East St. Louis Area
Outside Chicago, many streetcar systems in Illinois were part of Illinois Power & Light Co., a subsidiary of North American Light & Power Co., which also operated various connecting interurban lines. By the end of 1936, all local lines were disposed of, except in Peoria. Many of these transit systems were sold in 1936 to the newly formed National City Lines, in the first major cases of "bustitution", or conversion of streetcar systems to buses.
